In an effort to get a taste of life from the middle 1800s, Mr. Kaden’s Civil War classes did some Dutch oven cooking. The class prepared a molasses apple pie and cooked cornbread in the Dutch ovens. Heat was applied to the ovens by mounding hot coals below the ovens and on top of their lids. To ensure even cooking, students learned that choosing a level site is important and that rotating the lid and oven is necessary. Students noted that the food turned out well—the beautiful weather didn’t hurt anything either.
